Kremenchug was founded in 1571 as a fortress. Kremenchug acquired city status in 1765. The inhabitants of the settlement took part in peasants' revolts at the end of the 16 century and wars in the 17 century. In 1661-1663 Kremenchug was the center of Kremenchug regiment, in 1765-1783 - the administrative center of Novorossiysk gubernia (region) . Soviet power was established in Kremenchug in 1918.

The modern Kremenchug has developed important metallurgical and engineering industries that produce steel castings, rolling stock, heavy trucks and harvesters. Iron ore is mined in the vicinity, and oil from the river's left-bank area is refined in Kremenchug. In 1954 a large hydroelectric station was started to be built and was completed in 1959 just above Kremenchug, about 14 km from it. The Kremenchug reservoir was created by the hydroelectric station.
