Ternopil (Ternopol) oblast (region) was created on December 4, 1939. Ternopil oblast area is 2.3% of the territory of the Ukraine. Ternopil region borders on Ivano-Frankivsk oblast in the west and southwest, Chernivtsi oblast in the south, Lvov oblast in the Northwest, Rivne oblast in the north and Khmelnitski oblast in the east.
