Gorlovka (Russian spelling) or Horlivka (Ukrainian spelling) is a city of Donetsk oblast (region) of Ukraine. Gorlovka city is an important railway junction of Donetsk oblast of Ukraine.

First settlements of Cossacks in current Gorlovka city area appeared in the beginning of 18th century. In 1867 due to constructing Kursk-Kharkov-Azov railroad the village Gorlovka appeared to be the home for railroad workers. It was named in honor of mining engineer P.N.Gorlov.

At the same time the industry of coal mining was developing quickly and in 1871-1874 the coal mine "Korsun Kop #1" was built. At that time it was the largest coal mine in Donbass region. In 1886 the first Russian mercury factory was built in Gorlovka. In 1898 the Gorlovka population was about 7,000. In 1913 there were 50 factories of various industries in Gorlovka city with the total population of 30,000.

During Soviet period Gorlovka city was an important coal mining center with the population of 337,000 (1979). In recent years a lot of mines were closed, and Gorlovka population reduced by 20%.
