Izmail is a city of Odessa region (oblast) of Ukraine. Izmail city is situated in southeastern part of Odessa region on Dunai river, 80 kilometers from Black Sea. Izmail city is the largest port on Dunai river in Ukraine. There is an airport in Izmail Ukraine.

Izmail Ukraine city history

The date of Izmail city foundation is unknown. From 12th century there was a fortress there. The Izmail fortress was the object of rivalry of Russian and Turkish armies. July 26, 1770 Russian army captured the Izmail fortress. In 1774 according to peace treaty between Russian Empire and Turkey it was returned to Turkey.

By December 1790 the Izmail fortress had heavy defense and was called unassailable but famous Russian army commander A.V.Suvorov captured it that year. In 1791 it was returned to Turkey again. September 14, 1809 Russian army once again captured Izmail fortress and once again it was returned to Turkey in 1856.

April 13, 1877 Izmail fortress was captured by Russian army fourth time. In 1918 Izmail city was captured by Romania. In 1940 Soviet government forced Romania to return Izmail city to USSR. From July 1941 to August 26, 1944 Izmail city was under German and Romania armies control during World War II. From 1991 Izmail city belongs to Ukraine.
