UEFA President Michel Platini urged the international community to back Ukraine and Poland in organizing Euro 2012 despite doubts the ex-communist states, especially Ukraine, are able to do so, Reuters reported.
Platini said such public support was vital "in order to implement the democratic decision made by the UEFA executive committee to hold Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine".

World champion Wladimir Klitschko told David Haye to prove himself before he would consider fighting him, after the Briton stormed a charity press conference the Ukrainian was hosting on Saturday.
Haye is looking to move up to heavyweight after defeating compatriot Enzo Maccarinelli last month to become the undisputed cruiserweight champion and wants to fight Klitschko for the WBF and IBO heavyweight titles.
Klitschko, however, said Haye must wait his turn after he took over a press conference in London held to promote 'Fight for Peace', a boxing initiative for children.

Dynamo Kiev have moved to the top of the Ukraine Premier League with a 3-0 win at relegation-threatened FC Naftovyk-Ukrnafta.
Artem Milevskiy (two) and Maxim Shatskikh struck after the break to move Dynamo two points clear of Shakhtar Donetsk. At the other end of the table, the home side are now three points from safety.
Elsewhere, FC Kharkiv gave their survival hopes a boost with a 3-0 win at basement boys Zakarpattya. Artem Fedetskiy bagged a brace and Villiam Batista was also on target to lift Kharkiv four points clear of danger, while Zakarpattya have slipped seven points adrift of third-bottom FC Zarya Lugansk. Finally, goals from Isi Lakki Idahor, Galyuza and Zelko Lubenovic gave fifth-placed Tavriya Symferopol a 3-0 victory over Chornomorets.

Kyiv municipal state administration has decided to find a land lot until March 10 to compensate the Yudzhyn company for demolishing of the Troitskyi trade and entertainment center, which was built in front of national sports complex Olimpiiskyi in Kyiv. Ukrainian News learned this from a resolution by the Kyiv municipal state administration, the wording of which was made available to the agency.
The main department for land resources and the company would look for a land lot to build an office and entertaining center. On February 7, the Cabinet of Ministers and the Yudzhyn company reached agreement on demolition before June 1 of the Troitskyi trade and entertainment center being built in front of national sports complex Olimpiiskyi in Kyiv.

With the most significant competitions of the summer athletics season now complete, the Ukrainian Athletic Federation have kicked into action with the organisation of a series of seminars to see people through to the start of the Indoor season.
The series started with a 5-day seminar for the Heads of Regional Athletics Federations in Ukraine. 15 Regional Athletic Federation representatives took part in the seminar which focused on the legal aspects of Regional athletics and the increasingly important areas of marketing and PR, providing a number of guest speakers who shared their experiences of international meeting and national competition organisation. 23/10/2007

Ukraine Sports Minister Viktor Korzh has criticised what he has called inadequate preparations by the country's host cities for the 2012 European soccer championship to be staged jointly with Poland.
Although stadiums are being improved in Ukraine more than 15 years after independence from Soviet rule, rail and road links, airport facilities and hotels will all have to be overhauled to accommodate the inflow of fans. 24/08/2007

Gerry Carey, the former retail operations director at Glasgow Rangers, and ex-chief executive of Partick Thistle, has launched a unique brand consultancy aimed at helping European football clubs realise their commercial potential.
Carey, who was sacked by Partick Thistle in March after the club plunged into financial crisis, has already signed a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukrainian football champion, to develop the commercial operation for its new five-star UEFA-compliant stadium due to open in 2008.
Carey's company, Sports Retail Management (SRM), is also talking to, "a number of English Premiership and first division clubs", and is in advanced discussions with several other clubs in Eastern Europe. It is also in the process of setting up a meeting with the organisers of Euro 2012, with a view to securing the contract to advise on commercial potential surrounding the competition in Poland and Ukraine. Ivan Odessa AMA of Ukraine ensured they ended the UEFA Regions' Cup with points on the board with an impressive win against Switzerland's Ticino AMA.
Yuriy Syvoborodko coming agonisingly close to making it 2-0 on 51 minutes only to miss from close range. Ivan Odessa threatened again when Kucherenko's shot was blocked by a defender, Volodymyr Egorov hit the post with the follow-up and Voynikov was unable to turn in the rebound. Ticino were rarely able to trouble Maksim Malyita in the Ivan Odessa goal, other than a late Nicola Gianutti header, and their Matchday 1 victory against Aveiro remains the highlight of their tournament. 27/06/2007

A Coalition of Polish and Ukrainian Employers for Euro 2012 was founded Tuesday in the Polish embassy in Kiev by Ukrainian and Polish employer organizations, Polish PAP news agency reported. Aiding the organization of the 2012 European Football Championship in Ukraine and Poland and employing the event to boost both countries' economies will be the main tasks of the coalition. On April 18, Poland and Ukraine were chosen by UEFA to co-host the European Championship in 2012.

First win for Ukraine at the 2007 World Championship. The Relegation Round is still alive after Ukraine beat Norway 3-2. Yuri Navarenko scored the game-winner and goalkeeper Vadim Seliverstov saved 33 shots when Ukraine won its first game of the 2007 World Championship after four losses.

Kim Clijsters paid the price for a reduced playing schedule ahead of her July wedding to Brian Lynch when she was beaten 7-6 6-3 by Ukrainian qualifier Julia Vakulenko in the second round of the Warsaw Cup on Thursday. Fellow-Belgian Justine Henin, the top seed, moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-2 victory over Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld, however.

Ukraine -- Poland and Ukraine aim to jointly host the 2012 European football championships not for national pride alone, but to establish integration of eastern Europe's football. "UEFA has said explicitly that it wants to develop football in the east (of Europe), so our joint bid with Poland is the best choice in this sense," said one football official in Kiev.

Ukraine's Oleg Lisogor won the men's world 50 metres breaststroke title for the second time, six years after his first triumph. The 28-year-old stormed to gold in 27.66 seconds to fend off American 100m champion Brendan Hansen (27.69), who took silver, with South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh (27.88) winning the bronze. Lisogor broke the world record a year after that breakthrough win in Fukuoka in 2001 and has taken three straight European titles, including last year's triumph in Budapest.

Two Kyryl Petrov goals got Ukraine off to a good start in UEFA European Under-17 Championship Elite round Group 2 with a win against Slovakia. As mini-tournament hosts Italy had beaten 2006 runners-up the Czech Republic earlier today, the challenge had been laid down to both opponents in Tiezzo di Azzano Decimo, but it took until ten minutes into the second half for Petrov to break the deadlock. Slovakia had Igor Paldan sent off for a second bookable offence with four minutes left and as time ran out Petrov struck again to send Ukraine into the early group lead. On Monday Ukraine meet the Czechs and Slovakia take on Italy.

Ukrainian Wladimir Sidorenko retained the WBA bantamweight title Saturday, drawing with Panama's Ricardo Cordoba. One judge ruled the fight 117-11 for Sidorenko, making his fifth defence, while two called it 114-114. The draw was a repeat of a fight last March in Hamburg with the title on the line.
Sidorenko is 19-0-2, while Cordoba is 29-1-2. 20/03/2007

Wladimir Klitschko retained his IBF heavyweight title, stopping American challenger Ray Austin in the second round. The Ukrainian knocked Austin down 87 seconds into the round with two left hooks. The American climbed to his feet but the referee stopped the fight. The crowd of 15,000 roared for Klitschko when he marched in, then jeered a fight with just two or three landed punches. Austin had not gone the distance just once in his four losses.

A Ukrainian court has thrown out a complaint by a Georgian player that restrictions on the number of non-Ukrainians on top-level teams constitute an infringement of human rights. A district court in Kiev late on Monday said there was no case to answer in the complaint submitted by Georgiy Demetradze of premier league side Metallurg Donetsk. Demetradze had argued that restrictions allowing clubs to field only eight foreign players at any time during a match was an infringement of fundamental human rights and labour laws. The limit, put in place by the Ukrainian soccer federation and Ukraine's Professional Football League, aims to improve the chances of young Ukrainians in finding places on local teams. Demetradze was not included in Metallurg's line-up last weekend for their first game of the second half of the season against Stal Alchevsk.

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, the FC "Shakhtar Donetsk" captain and a player of the National Team has moved to the russian FC "Zenit", having signed a 4-year contract with the Saint Petersburg's club, the FC "Shakhtar".

A special council to ensure the ecological security of the Sochi region, which is bidding to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, will be formed by the Russian government. Wednesday's announcement came amid rising criticism from activists that holding the Olympics could severely damage the region's ecology through extensive construction, increased sewage and waste and a huge influx of visitors.

Comebacking former two-time world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will be in Miami for Sunday’s Super Bowl game between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears. Klitschko arrives in Miami on Thursday and will be accompanied by his personal manager, Bernd Boente.

Andriy Shevchenko got back in Jose Mourinho's good books as his double strike sent Chelsea through to the League Cup final with a 4-0 win against Wycombe Wanderers at Stamford Bridge. Shevchenko had been frozen out by Mourinho in recent weeks after failing to live up to his 30 million pounds price tag, but he went some way to redeeming himself with two clinical finishes against the visitors from the fourth tier of English professional football.
